Amaranth, Manna de Montana (110 days) Amaranthus hypochondriacus

A unique species of grain amaranth from the subtropical Mexican highlands that requires a fairly long season to mature when compared to our other grain amaranths.  Tall 5-7’ tall plants have pale green edible leaves, green stems and pale yellow- green seed heads.  Grain from this specie is a bright orange as opposed to the white seeds of the Ellen’s Purple or UCSC popping amaranths.  Cut seed heads and lay out to dry at the end of the season and then they are easy to thresh out.  Very productive – they can produce 1-2 ounces of grain per plant.
