Maiz Concho Flint (110-120 days) Zea mays We are grateful to share this beautiful heirloom from a nice crop grown by Dan Hobbs at Pueblo Seed in Colorado. Corn is strongly adapted to latitude, so when we grew this SW corn in Oregon it grew very tall (10-12’) and produced ears late. So, unless you are closer to 35 degrees Latitude, then allow for a very long season for this strain to mature. Maize de Concho is included in the Slow Food Ark of Taste collection because it has been used for preparing Chicos, a method of cooking involving harvest- ing at the green (milk) stage and prepared via an ancient technique through roasting in an earthen oven called an “Horno”. Chicos are still made by residents of the Upper Rio Grande and San Luis Valley where there is a revival of this endangered regional food in Acequia communities. This is an ancient flint type of corn that can periodically revert back to ancestral phenotypes indicative of its wild parentage from Teosinte. Ears are 9-14” long with pale, shell-white kernels. Corn, Oregon Blue Maiz, Flour (75-110 days) Zea mays We have created a strain cross between 4 blue flour corns (Hopi Blue, Rio Grande Pueblo from NM, Chihuahua Blue, and Papa's Blue - which is a blue strain of the short season Painted Mountain.) The goal is to eventually develop a well adapted, reliable staple Maiz for the PNW and similar climates. It will exhibit some variability, however all will make good flour corn.  If you save seed, particularly if you do it for numerous cycles, then you are on your way to having your own Heirloom of tomorrow! Can be eaten as sweet corn when picked young and roasted, but is best known for making an excellent, sweet blue corn flour that has 30% higher protein levels (up to 14%) than dent corns. Plants are 5-8 ft. tall and bushy with many tillering side shoots.  Ears are a beautiful smooth silvery blue that are 8-10” long with usually 2, but up to 7 per stalk. Cover Crop Seed Cool Season Soil Building Mix Growing a cover crop (aka Green Manure) is a wonderful way to build soil organic matter, protect the soil against erosion, fix nitrogen, provide habitat for beneficial insects & pollinators and so much more! We typically plant cool season cover crops after harvesting the last of the summer garden which is typically in October here in Oregon.  Alternately, they can be planted as early in late winter or early spring as possible.   This mixture of cool season varieties is a proven mix that we use here on our farm and in gardens. The cereal grain Oats sprout quickly and provide a vertical scaffold for the peas and vetch to climb. Millet, Aukse's Foxtail (100 days) Setaria italica - Most typically grown for floral arrangements and bird seed. Tops are dense almost fluffy looking clusters of small seeds that grow from 4-10” long. Tops droop in a form that resembles a foxes tail. Lovely waving growth characteristic when caught by a breeze in the garden.  From our friends at Adaptive Seeds who obtained it while on their Seed Ambassadors Project by The Lithuanian Ministry of Agriculture in Dotnuva, Lithuania, who wrote that “the breeder there had been working with millets since long before the collapse of the Soviet Union and the birds at the zoo prefer his varieties.”  Foxtail millet has a hull which is quite difficult to remove and as such used for the applications above more often than human consumption. Milllet, Mukombi, Pearl type (110 days) Pennisetum glaucum - A striking Pearl millet type that we obtained from the Kenyan highlands. Plant is a tropical grass that resembles corn until seed heads form that rise 8-12’ above the grown like a valiant torch to the sun. Sorghum, Coral Sorghum bicolor  (105 days)   A monocot related to corn with a similar growth habit to about 6 feet tall that is commonly grown throughout much of Africa, but less common in the USA.  Sorghum can be grown for grain, bird food, and also a sweet syrup can be pressed from the stalks much like sugar cane.  This variety has pretty panicles of coral colored grain as opposed to the multi colored black and red of the Hungarian broomcorn we offer to which it is closely related.
