Tomato, de Penjar Songil, storage
(85 days) Solanum lycopersicum -
This is a Spanish variety from our friends in the Catalonia region of Spain who have a farm based co-operative seed company called Les Refardes. “Penjar” translates from Catalan as “to hang” referring to the tradition of hanging the tresses of fruits from string in the kitchen where they can last for up to 6 months!
According to friends from Catalonia, Penjar or Colgar are the best, or only, types of tomatoes that can be used to make the Catalan Tomato Bread (Pa Amb Tomàquet).
Growth habit is semi-indeterminate, they do benefit from trellising and light pruning. Largish 2-2&1/2” fruit has a pink cast to the skin, firm flesh and yellow shoulders.
